6 Hour Csound

This is a piece I made for Dr. Boulanger Csound class at Berklee. Like many of my colleagues, we were given the Csound catalog and 6 hours to make a tune. All the sounds we used in the piece had to be rendered by in Csound and we only had 6 hours to work on the project. I would like to thank all of you who contributed to the wonderful collection of instruments, inspiration and knowledge that is the Csound Catalog.
Enjoy my piece!

All the best,

Michael

Mouse_On_Mars

This is my 6 Hour composition for Dr. Boulanger's Csound class in Berklee. I used my 6 hours in no specific order, but I divided them in approximately 2.5 hours looking for/sampling instruments, 3 hours sequencing and .5 hours mixing. Its a track inspired by Mouse on Mars,

Enjoy!

This is a piece that I composed for Dr. Boulanger's Csound class in Berklee. Its a note-list composition. Its a variation of my original class project, perhaps simpler, but works better musically.

Deepening

I've been studying this past semester in Dr. Boulanger's Csound class at Berklee College of Music. One of Dr B's many challenges included writing a piece in only six hours, to be entirely made from sounds found in the Csound Instrument Catalogue. For my project entitled "Deepening," I used samples rendered from the Csound Catalogue, which I arranged and manipulated with effects processors in Ableton Live. I used the Simpler and Drum Rack unit to shape many of my instruments.

Alex Gear 6 hour challenge "Stop Light"

This is my entry into the six hour challenge for Dr. B's Csound class. The instruments were designed in Ableton Live, mostly using the "Simpler" instrument using only rendered audio from Csound Catalog 2.5 synthesizers. Ableton Live was rewired into Pro Tools to record lines, loops and rhythms and then edited, arranged and mixed in Pro Tools.

The list of catalog files used is as follows:

bd14_01 Varga Catalog
03_01_1 Gather Amsterdam Catalog
wts7 Comanjuncosas Collection
035PluckBass Varo_PinkstonDX Collection
analog3 Comanjuncosas Collection
bell1 Risset Catalog

Alex Gear 1 minute composition

This was my first attempt at a composition in Csound using the note-list for Dr. B's Csound class. The piece was inspired by Arvo Part's "Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten"--a cannon by augmentation using a single mode. In Cantus a desending Aeolian scale is repeatedly played against which the same scale is played at increasing rhythmic beat divisions. Evaporation uses ascending triadic structures from the lydian mode played at rhythmic subdivisions related to each other via prime numbers.

I've been a member of Dr. Boulanger's Csound class this semester, and I'm posting a few of my compositions for you to hear. I would really love to know what you think, so that I can improve my future work in Csound which I hope to continue far beyond this class.

This is my 6 hour challenge submission. We were allowed 6 hours in which to design or modify instruments in Csound and then use them to compose a piece of music in any sequencer of our choice, using samplers and anything else we so chose.

This is an example of where I used Csound in a project I was working on already (Logic Pro). It was a project I began a while ago and then abandoned, in which I was taking location-recorded sounds, some of which were my own and some of which were royalty free samples and building a piece from there.

This is my one minute note list composition, and it is intended to be a soundscape inspired by a cave. It was written very early on in my exposure to Csound.

Thank you for time in listening, and also for answering my questions on the mailing list.
