Multi thread operation ?

Hello,
i've been using csound on and off for 8-9 years. I'm unable to find information about Csound 5 on multi core processors.

Does it support multi core cpu ? I'm using in in real time and would like to know if using a 4 core cpu like a mac pro would be helpful ?

Thank you!

Probably somewhat

As I understand it, a multicore processor won't split a single thread across CPUs, and Csound is definitely single-threaded. However, the OS itself should be able to take advantage, running sound output for instance on a separate core.

I've been running Csound on a dual-CPU BeOS machine for a few years, and I find that, for something like my Hammond emulator which makes fairly heavy demands (on an old, slow box!), I can't turn off one of the CPUs without completely wrecking real-time play. (Less demanding configurations still run fine without both CPUs active.)

So I'd expect a multicore machine to certainly be an advantage, even if Csound itself can't use it.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply. It seems on my dual core machine, it somewhat uses a bit of the other core for something. Even if it doesn't fully use both cores, i am running a midi sequencer to drive csound so the power isn't wasted.

I wish it was multi threaded to make use of upcoming 4 core cpus. The current Mac Pro has an 8 core version. This would give some serious power to run complex csound instruments in real-time...

Have a nice day.

Another idea...

Well, it might be more limited but i suppose i could run 2 instances of csound. Both running the same files but receiving midi from a different input. I could then take advantage of my dual core.

Anyways, for now it's working pretty well on a single core :)
