Apologies...a super-newb question

Hi there, I'm very new to csound and just trying to get the damn thing up and running! I have a 2.16 GHz intel core 2 duo imac with OSX 10.4.11 and I've downloaded and installed csound5. On reading some of the beginners advice, it seems that a 'front end' is advisable. I have made the assumption that this is some kind of slightly-more-user-friendly graphical interface that helps me get things moving...is this correct?

With that assumption in mind, I downloaded MacCsound and installed it and attempted to start it. It simply did not start. It flashed briefly on my dock and dissappeared. It is present in my applications folder, so I'm puzzled to say the least. I tried the same thing with multiple versions of qute csound with the same results exactly.

Please guys, what am I doing wrong??

Many thanks for your time,

Terry.

MacCSound

You need to install CsoundLibX in addition to MacCSound for everything to work correctly. You should find the link here:

If I recall correctly, there should be three different installs that come with the CSoundLibX package, and I think you need to install all of them.

Re: Apologies...a super-newb question

Hi Terry,

Have you resolved this issue yet?

I don't think the suggestion about installing CsoundLibX will help at all assuming that you are using the latest MacCsound. Recent versions of MacCsound require that you install Csound 5 from http://csound.sourceforge.net/ However, the version 5.10 and later of Csound are incompatible with MacCsound due to some internal changes. If you want to use MacCsound, then you should install Csound 5.08. (The situation is actually more complicated than this. You can read other posts on this forum and the Csound mailing list in the last few months for more detail).

I would recommend using QuteCsound instead of MacCsound for now. It is up-to-date and definitely supported by its author. I suspect that QuteCsound did not work for you because you downloaded the wrong package. There are two packages available for Mac OS X. One includes the required QT libraries and the other does not (in the case that you already have them installed). You probably downloaded the package without QT.

If you have any further trouble getting QuteCsound to work, I'd suggest that you subscribe to the Csound mailing list and inquire about it there. You will get a prompt and helpful response.

Best of luck.

Anthony
