Some people have not noticed yet, so I post here for a wider audience to see. Csound 5 is now present in Debian sid/unstable and in Ubuntu hardy and intrepid.
No need to compile from sources anymore! Hopefully csound will migrate to testing lenny once all dependencies have been built on all archs.

Except if you want the opcodes which were not packaged due to a conflict with the Debian Free Software Guidelines. There aren't many that were left out, but some of us like options ;-)

Also, as John ffitch pointed out on the Csound email list, enabling optimizations on a custom compile can really make a difference . . . especially for those of us on older, slower machines.

Well, yes
Those opcodes are the scanned synthesis opcodes (scansyn, scansynx). It's only 2 opcodes. I wish the DFSG conflict would go away, but apparently the copyright holder can't be reached anymore.
And about optimizations, you can use the source package and enable your own optimizations there. Maybe I can add a helper code for that. It would greatly simplify the user's life.
Loris/STK?
Does the Debian package include the Loris and STK opcodes as well? Just wondering. I get STK to compile, but the Loris opcodes never work from source. Apparently they run better than (the currently non-functional) adsyn and friends. (But I wouldn't know... :) )

No, they aren't. STK is not built because it has some problems in Debian (should be built once that is fixed), but the Loris opcodes can't be built because Loris is not in Debian. Should someone package it for Debian and then we could enable them.
