For the sparse chordal accompaniment, I tried to get an effect like a chorus of strings. Instead, what I have sounds similar to an accordion, or some other reed instrument. I used wgbow as the basis for the instrument, but the sound was a bit harsh -- I rolled off the highs a bit with a tone control.

I'm holding off judgment on this instrument until I hear it in context. The volume of this part will be lower than the melody, and supported by the bass. Frequently, an instrument that sounds too harsh at high volume sounds perfect in a mix at lower volume. This is because of the 'loudness response' of the human ear.
